Message :My dad's cadillac back in the 80's had the TH400 coupled to the 500 cubic inch V8.
I don't understand the correllation so much...

anyway,
TH400 is a 3 speed automatic, typically, with out a lock up torque converter. (never heard of a TH400 with lockup until SirpriZ said something).
TH400 weighs just over 1/2 of what a 4l60(e) weighs.
TH400 has manual(vacuum) valve galleries... Not as easy to tune as plugging in a laptop, but less glitchy once your tuned.

4L60E requires a standalone PCM.
4L60E weighs a but load (#200-250 pounds I think).
4L60E is a 4 speed overdrive, with lockup torque converter.

I *think* the gear ratios of the TH400 have the advantage over the 4L60E as well.

The 4L80E is a freaking 4 ton monster trans, capabable of massive HP handling... but it's a monster, and requires all that computer crap.

for simplicity of design and ability to hold the power, I think the TH400 ends up as the hands down favorite.
